Abstract

This paper centres on a current adolescent self-harm preventative intervention research project at DECIPHer (the Centre for the Design and Evaluation of Complex Interventions for Public Health Improvement) in Cardiff University. It will deliver key information and recommendations for managing the potential risk of harm to secondary school pupil research participants within community-based adolescent self-harm prevention intervention research. It provides an in-depth overview of the research project’s safety plan, including the research interview safety protocol design and delivery. The safety plan was successful in managing the potential risks and avoiding harm to the school-based adolescent research participants. This work is designed to help address some of the current research barriers to completing adolescent self-harm prevention intervention research in schools. It also contributes to the emerging knowledge-base and discussion highlighting the complex ethical issues that can arise when completing adolescent self-harm research with young people. RESEARCH PROJECT BACKGROUND: The current research project’s aim is to complete a grounded theory analysis of staff and student perceptions of the institutional factors impacting adolescent self-harm prevention intervention support in the secondary school context in Wales. It utilises qualitative, participatory research methods to generate rich and detailed evidence from 76 research participants of which 30 are secondary school pupils. It will deliver an analysis using grounded theory for public health socio-ecological informed theoretical modelling. This project is currently in its data analysis stage.
