Abstract

The research aimed to assess the current knowledge base regarding young people’s engagement with the museum and heritage sector, and to explore the views of museum staff and young people involved in the Hands on Heritage programme at Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales. Objective 1: Collate and report relevant data and literature. Objective 2: Conduct an in-depth qualitative research study with young people and museum staff to provide an insight into their experience of being involved with the Hands on Heritage programme, and their opinions on what could be done to improve the model and encourage engagement with and ownership of the heritage sector more widely. The research study was guided by the following central research questions: • How do young people become involved with Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales? • How do young people interact with each other, museum staff and museum spaces in project activities and what kinds of interaction offer the best potential for empowering young people to participate meaningfully and to 'take control' of project activities? • How can the design of projects and activities be improved to create more participatory opportunities and spaces in Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales? • What policies and strategies need to be in place at Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales to build sustainable relationships with young people and heritage? To meet these objectives the research followed a two-phase design. In relation to objective one, to provide a background to the study literature was collated through a rapid review. The review provided information on the current knowledge base around museum based cultural engagement programmes with young people, where collaboration, co-production and youth leadership is centralised. In relation to objective two, an in-depth qualitative research study was conducted, which involved observations of museum spaces and activities with young people, and interviews with young people and museum staff involving creative methods. This qualitative element of the research sought to address the central research questions.
