Abstract
Objective: To examine changes in bone density in women treated with corticosteroids for chronic active hepatitis. Design: Follow-up measurements of bone mineral density were made in women with chronic active hepatitis after 4.5 years (range 3.3 to 5.1 years). Methods: Sixteen out of the 17 women originally reported had repeat measurements of bone density. Their age ranged from 19 to 72 years (mean 49 years) and 10 were postmenopausal. The mean daily dose of prednisolone during follow-up was 5.5 mg (range 0 to 10 mg); five patients also received azathioprine. Cortical bone, represented by the distal radius, was measured by single photon absorptiometry and trabecular bone in the lumbar spine by quantitative computed tomography.
