Abstract

During the last decade media clustering has been used more and more as tool to develop local media industries. This newly emerge focus is responsible for governments, scholars and managers being increasingly interested in understanding media clusters better. Studies have shown how complex and unique media clusters are. Observations made for one case is not easily transferable to another.<br>In order to enable comparative and meaningful analysis, this paper pursues the goal of making the phenomenon more precise by presenting a typology of key drivers. 30 different case studies from literature have been analysed. Similarities and differences were used to group the cases into a meaningful typology. The preliminary results suggest, that media clusters rarely feature any single type of typology. The re-occurring key drivers are the locational conditions, the governance structures in place and the capabilities of collaboration.
