Abstract

The aim of the present study is to examine the link between perceptual and attentional processing of real and fake smiles using the recording of eye movements during the task of judging the authenticity of smiles in children. Children aged 6-7 and 9-10 are exposed to smiles that include the characteristics of an authentic smile (symmetrical Duchenne) as well as smiles without the activation of the Duchenne marker (non-Duchenne) and asymmetrical smiles (asymmetrical Duchenne), both signs of non-authenticity. The results reveal that children, regardless of age group, rate the symmetrical Duchenne smile as more joyful than the asymmetrical Duchenne smile and the asymmetrical Duchenne smile as more joyful than the non-Duchenne smile. Participants also give the expected answer more often for the symmetrical Duchenne smile and the non-Duchenne smile than for the asymmetrical Duchenne smile. However, analysis of saccades and fixation time reveals no significant differences according to smile type (symmetrical Duchenne, asymmetrical Duchenne, non-Duchenne for both age groups. In sum, the trends in eye movements in children do not rule out the hypothesis of attentional-perceptual limits. The theoretical implication of the results is discussed in addition to linking it to previous studies in adults.
