Abstract
The paper explores the potential of prefabrication in the renovation sector and argues the need for a semantic, modular, and scalable approach. Compared to traditional construction processes, prefabrication aims at reducing costs without compromising quality and facilitating the installation/dismantling/re-use of components. This is in-line with the objective of renovation projects, which in addition need to comply with stringent energy regulations. There are however cultural and technical barriers that hinder the wider adoption of prefabrication in the renovation sector. The papier reviews state-of-the-art initiatives in the renovation sector and proposes directions for future research.
