Abstract

The title of this Special Issue derives from that of one of the Working Groups at the Global Conference on Oceans and Coasts at Rio+10, held at UNESCO in Paris in December 2001. This was one of several international conferences convened in the lead up to the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) held at Johannesburg from 26 August to 4 September 2002. At the Paris Conference, a range of emerging issues were identified in the context of ocean governance [1]. These issues are grouped into six clusters 1Population-related and societal issues Population Gender Indigenous peoples 2Environment-related issues Invasive species and emergent diseases Adapting to global climate change 3Trade and industry-related issues Trade Tourism Decommissioning of offshore oil and gas installations Ports Recycling of ships 4New uses of the sea Exploring and exploiting deep sea resources Genetic resources of the deep sea bed Underwater cultural heritage The implications of expansions in marine aquaculture Marine eco-tourism 5Science and technology 6Security Piracy and armed robbery at sea Peace and security
