Abstract
The past two decades saw a significant increase of interest in examining the role of prior linguistic knowledge in third language (L3) learning in psychological and educational research (Bhatia & Richie, 2013). As an early career researcher in multilingual acquisition, I am particularly interested in exploring the source of transfer in L3 learning and factors associated with it. My previous master's dissertation examined backward transfer from a later acquired language (L3) back to an early acquired one (L2) in language processing and I am currently working on a doctoral dissertation that explores how L3 learning leads to reconstructions in the conceptual categories developed in two prior languages. Due to the high variability of learners' individual differences and multiplicity of factors intervening the learning process, defining and operationalizing language transfer is a real challenge. At the same time, the research that has been done has not been fully explored in the practical field of instructed L3 teaching and learning. In this regard, I find the Angelovska and Hahn's volume informative and motivating as it integrates state-of-the-art psycholinguistic approaches to language transfer with new findings by accounting for the complexities of individual differences. It also bridges formal linguistic theories and pedagogical approaches for L3 teaching and learning.
