Abstract

A fight for the right to life This paper will describe the experience of a parent with a child with Spina Bifida diagnosed prenatally. This was disclosed during a research project exploring ‘family centred care’ with disabled children. Extracts from the interview will be used to illustrate the ethical dilemmas which arose. This mother felt unsupported in her decision to keep her baby with Spina Bifida, this was in contrast to the support she had received for her disabled child. The discussion will focus around the challenge of supporting parents in decision making in midwifery and health care practice. The question remains do we support parents in their decision making or do we influence their choices in one direction that we perceive to be the best outcome? Key words: Supporting mothers in their decision making; disabled child
