Abstract
This analysis piece considers whether indirect rule in Northern Ireland is now the default alternative to a Stormont executive. Reviews the operation of direct rule from 2017 to 2020, the New Deal approach, the collapse of the executive in 2022, and whether indirect rule can avoid constitutionally problematic elements.
