Abstract
The Chinese government has delivered policies to deal with environmental deterioration and CO2 emissions in the last two decades. Approaches to environmental management have also been amended to adapt to environmental governance mechanisms. This chapter, by reviewing the overall development of environmental governance theories, discusses the interaction between environmental governance, economic development and social justice to deal with China’s particular social-ecological problems via exploring a proper environmental governance model. This chapter has also identified the major elements, for example, power, resources, trust and commitment, and Guanxi (interpersonal social ties), which impact collaborative environmental governance in the Chinese context.
