Abstract
This chapter develops the concept of circular vertical integration to raise concerns over contemporary business model innovation for the emergent circular economy. Using examples from the automotive industry, the chapter suggests that business may be seeking to enhance corporate power over products, materials, and consumers while innovating for the circular economy rather than seeking engagement with multiple stakeholders or acquiring goods and services via the market. The chapter concludes that a more critical perspective on business models for sustainability is needed to understand the long-term implications of a circular economy framework for incumbent large multinational product and service companies.
