Abstract

The paper proposes a numerical model for predicting moisture and temperature evolution in concrete at early age along with the accompanying shrinkage. In particular, the model includes an approach for simulating the evolution of the porosity. It is suggested that the introduction of a porosity development model, which is linked to the moisture mass-balance equation, is important because if the porosity development is described independently of the moisture mass balance then inconsistent results can arise. An algorithm for computing autogenous shrinkage is presented and the performance of the model is assessed by considering its ability to reproduce the behaviour of a standard code equation as well as some data from a recent experimental investigation. The comparisons show good matches in both cases.
