Hall, Natalie-Anne 2025. Conclusion: Japan’s multi-ethnic future. Saveliev, Igor and Hall, Natalie-Anne, eds. Migration, Aging, and Japan's Sustainable Society, Routledge Contemporary Japan Series, Routledge, |
Abstract
In the Conclusion to this volume, Natalie-Anne Hall reflects on the range of case studies that have been covered, and summarizes their contribution to our understanding of migration, aging and sustainable society in Japan. A key thread running through the contributions is social and cultural change, alongside continuity and resistance to change. Each of the cases examined in this volume, Hall argues, points to challenges and inadequacies in policies to support minority communities, while also offering hope through their stories of everyday interactions, innovation and resilience. The themes examined include the implications of the changing shape of Japan’s ethnic minority and foreign national population, the invaluable contribution of migrant minorities to Japan’s economic and social sustainability, and Japanese society’s reckoning with the necessity of ethno-cultural diversity. Hall concludes by offering a point of departure for future research on the sustainability of Japan’s aging society in what promises to be a dynamic time in Japan’s history of immigration reform.
