Abstract

This essay takes the reader to the coast of Wales, to join a group of outdoor swimmers in midwinter. Together, they walk to/into/out of two different bodies of water – a pond and a harbour. Paying close attention to the steps between land and water, the essay explores how different terrains can shape our experiences in just a few steps, allowing or preventing entry and exit, requiring assistance and support, inducing discomfort or reassurance, and bringing the swimmers together. Through these movements and moments, the essay explores the politics of trespass, nature and belonging, and offers an alternative to understandings of landscape, immersion and connection that are individualised and romanticised.
