Abstract

The inaugural Experiences of Disability: Interdisciplinary Insights event took place on 15 July 2024 at Cardiff University. Bringing together academic researchers, practitioners, third-sector professionals, and people with lived experience of disability, the event created an inclusive and meaningful space for interdisciplinary dialogue on disability research. The event drew attendees from across Cardiff University's schools, alongside representatives from charities, third-sector organisations, and government bodies. The centrepiece of the day was a facilitated panel discussion in which disabled participants were invited to share what they would like others to know about their disability. Four interconnected themes emerged from the discussion: Communication, Attitudes, Improving Inclusion, and Day-to-day Living. Participants spoke powerfully about the frustrations of being misunderstood, the exhaustion of masking, and the importance of genuine inclusion not only in services and institutions, but in research itself. This report documents the key insights shared on the day and offers recommendations for researchers and institutions committed to more inclusive and equitable engagement with disabled people. It is the first in what is now an annual series.
