Abstract

This chapter investigates emotional regulation in anorexia nervosa, with particular emphasis on how emotions shape identity and relationships. Reviewing evidence across cognitive, behavioural, and neurobiological domains, it shows how avoidance and suppression of emotion contribute to disconnection, loneliness, and difficulties in forming authentic relationships. The chapter also considers therapeutic models that place emotions at the centre of treatment, such as Emotion-Focused Therapy, Compassion-Focused Therapy, and Radically Open Dialectical Behaviour Therapy. Clinical implications are discussed, highlighting the need to support emotional awareness as a foundation for identity development.
