Abstract
Purpose (the aim of the study): Osteoarthritis (OA) is a major cause of chronic pain worldwide. In OA, physiologically silent nociceptors become activated. The molecular mechanisms governing pain in OA remain elusive. Differences in animal and human peripheral nerve populations and pain responses mean that there is a necessity for human cell derived models of OA pain. Induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) models capable of generating human nociceptors provide potential to model OA pain. However, the multitude of cell lines available, combined with the various types of sensory neuron within the human nervous system means that careful validation is required before widespread adoption for OA pain modelling.
