Abstract
Purpose (the aim of the study): Osteoarthritic pain affects 18% of females and 9.6% of males over 60 worldwide, with 62% of all osteoarthritic patients being female. Women use more health care, have higher osteoarthritis prevalence, suffer more from debilitating pain, particularly post-menopause, and have more rapid disease progression. However, the molecular drivers underlying the differences between males and females, and post-menopause, in osteoarthritic pain and pathology is unknown. We used a human iPSC derived nociceptor model to determine whether responses to human synovial fluids are sex specific, relate to systemic oestradiol concentrations and correlate with synovial fluid proteins.
