Abstract

This chapter explores the role that cultural geographers could and should play in ‘protest’ activities. Firstly, the chapter outlines how cultural geographers use their role to give insight into where protest occurs, how these actions are defined by particular stakeholders, and the range of outcomes that are mobilised as a consequence. Secondly, the chapter interrogates how the subdiscipline can be positioned in relation to protest activities. Whilst some cultural geographers explicitly contribute to the protests they study, in a context where culture is increasingly framed in terms of ‘war’, the actions of all may now be seen to be protest in some form. In such a context, not only does our commitment to exploring how culture plays a vital role in transforming geographies take on new emphasis, but our commitment to challenge prevailing orthodoxies also reminds us of the stakes involved in doing research. An emphasis on protest thus sensitises us to the ways that cultural geography has an integral connection to political action, and how we combine conflict, creativity, and conviviality in our work can offer inspiring futures for our turbulent world.
