Abstract

Schizophrenia (SCZ) is a complex disorder with both clinical and biological heterogeneity, and to date, effective diagnosis, treatment and prevention strategies are largely absent. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) plays a crucial role in the brain suggesting that genetic variants in this system may contribute to the etiology of mental illnesses. However, due to lack of analytical workflow to guide researchers on unique features of mtDNA, large genomics consortia has been removing this genome from analysis.
