Abstract
The occurrence of mantle-derived carbonatites in the geologic record since ∼3 billion years ago (Ga) allows to track the evolution of carbon-bearing mantle sources throughout much of the Earth's history. There appears to be continuing evidence for a significant proportion of subducted marine sedimentary material into the mantle sources of many carbonatites, attested by large ranges in εSr(i) from 7 to 73 and in εNd(i) from −10 to +0.5 which is different to conventional carbonatites originating from asthenospheric mantle with a limited contribution from enriched mantle sources; yet, neither sedimentary recycling via subduction nor common mantle metasomatism can explain highly unradiogenic and correlated initial 143Nd/144Nd ratios with εNd(i) values as low as −18.3, observed in many worldwide carbonatites with emplacement ages ranging from ∼2.0 Ga to 30 Ma. Here, we argue that these carbonatites require derivation from a long-lived mantle reservoir characterized by low-Sm/Nd (<0.17). These signatures can be best explained by admixture of an ancient, low-Sm/Nd slab-derived component that must have been incorporated into the mantle source parental to these low-143Nd/144Nd carbonatites at least 2.7 billion years ago.
