Abstract
This article examines the experiences of women entrepreneurs and cultural workers in Taiwan’s independent music industry through the cases of LUCfest and In Utero. Drawing on interviews and industry observation, the article explores how female-led initiatives have become increasingly influential within Taiwan’s contemporary independent music scene, shaping touring, festival organisation, artist management, international networking, and music marketing. The discussion situates these developments within wider global conversations surrounding gender inequality in the music industries, including the underrepresentation of women in leadership, production, and decision-making roles. Focusing on the experiences of organisers and founders such as Hung Wei-Ning, KK Yeh Wan-Ching, and the team behind In Utero, the article highlights both the opportunities and structural challenges encountered by women working in Taiwan’s music sector. It argues that female cultural workers have played a significant role in expanding Taiwan’s independent music ecology and international visibility while simultaneously negotiating persistent gendered expectations and industry inequalities. By foregrounding personal narratives and entrepreneurial experiences, the article provides insight into the changing dynamics of creative labour, gender, and cultural production in Taiwan’s independent music industries.
