Abstract
The air humidity in the marine atmospheric boundary layer (MABL) is significantly higher than that on land, so the applicability of standard dry boundary layer assumptions requires further examination. To this end, a novel large eddy simulation (LES) numerical framework has been developed, incorporating the water vapour budget equation, mass and heat transfer equations during phase change, and an actuator line method. This new strategy evaluates the effects of water vapour processes on the turbulence structure of MABL under varying thermal stabilities (stable, neutral, and convective), as well as the performance and wake dynamics of an IEA 15 MW reference wind turbine. Results show that the turbulence characteristics in a quasi-steady clear MABL are insensitive to initial air humidity, which only affects the spin-up stage. At 100% relative humidity, cloud formation occurs in the upper convective/neutral MABL and the bulk stable MABL. Latent heat release significantly alters the profiles of turbulence scalars and fluxes in these layers...
