Abstract
This chapter explores the intimate and unsettling entanglement of gender and violence through feminist, postcolonial, critical race, and queer theories. Beginning with two contemporary cases, war (with particular focus on Gaza and Ukraine) and the murder of Dr Moumita Debnath in India, it considers how violence is differentially visible depending on our epistemological tools, location, and attention. It interrogates the historical construction of gender as a concept, tracing its emergence from deterministic sex-based models to more complex and contested understandings. The chapter reflects on how gender has been both a vehicle for and a site of violence, and how masculinised imaginaries continue to shape war, politics, and public discourse. I argue that gender is not a stable or comfortable category, but a deeply politicised and ambivalent one, shaped by, and shaping, structures of power, embodiment, and harm.
