Abstract

The Tablighi Jamaʿat is one of the most important spiritual revivalist movements in contemporary Islam. From humble origins in British India, it has over the past century established a grassroots presence in Muslim communities around the world. This chapter first examines the Tablighi Jamaʿat’s historical emergence through the life of its founder, Mawlana Muhammad Ilyas Kandhlawi (d. 1944), and his successors. Next, it presents the core ethos, values, texts, and organizational methods of the movement, focusing on its well-known “Six Qualities.” Lastly, it considers the movement’s spread in the modern world—from South Asia to Africa, the ASEAN countries, the Middle East, and the West—exploring the diverse roles it plays in different societies. The success of the movement is attributed to its creedal and organizational simplicity, its apolitical stance, and its bottom-up empowering of lay Muslims to become active agents of Islamic revival.
