Abstract

Voices into Vision: A Socio-Technical Investigation of Damp, Mould and Ventilation in UK Housing was an EPSRC Impact Acceleration Account project led by the Welsh School of Architecture, Cardiff University. The work was developed in collaboration with Cardiff Council, Welsh Government, EYST Wales, TPAS Cymru and Nuaire, bringing together academic, policy, housing, community and industry perspectives. The project examined damp, mould and ventilation in social housing through a socio technical lens. Rather than treating damp and mould as issues caused primarily by tenant behaviour, the project investigated how building condition, ventilation systems, heating affordability, household routines, resident circumstances and institutional responses interact in everyday life. This approach was important because residents are often advised to “ventilate more” or “manage moisture better”, while the practical ability to do so may be shaped by cost, cold homes, system usability, repair histories, overcrowding, health needs, safety concerns and lack of trust in reporting processes.
