Abstract

Supervision is widely recognized as a key component of social work practice, with a history stretching back to the foundations of the profession in the 19th century. Supervision necessarily involves a relationship between two or more people, and offers a forum for reflection, development, and thoughtful decision-making. This entry provides a broad overview of the evidence base for social work supervision, in relation to the wider organization, for workers, and for people using services. It also identifies a commonly observed gap between social work's aspirations for supervision and the everyday experience for many supervisors and supervisees. It concludes by outlining a set of key principles for good supervision, applicable across different contexts, while encouraging a flexible approach to meet the needs of individual supervisees and people using services.
