Abstract

The unprecedented scale of anthropogenic environmental change invalidates traditional anthropocentric perceptions of time and ethics. In response, this paper explores the interplay between two dissonant ontological conceptualisations of care—Donna Haraway’s "oddkinship" and Timothy Morton’s "strange strangers"—examining the temporal dissonance between the relational immanence of the "Chthulucene" and the transcendental qualities of "hyperobjects.” Through an interrogative and diffractive analysis of these speculative concepts, we navigate the situated, relational practices advocated by Haraway and the unfathomable spatiotemporal depth of ecological entanglements articulated by Morton. By identifying how these divergent temporal ontologies shape their respective ethical proposals, this paper reveals unexpected resonances that transcend anthropocentrism. Through this synthesis, we propose a reimagining of ethical practice that embraces the profound complexity of more-than-human entanglement: an emergent speculative "ethics of attunement."
