Abstract

This paper presents a structured literature review that serves as the contextual and theoretical foundation for an ongoing doctoral study on ageing in place in Indonesia. It explicitly addresses three research objectives: (1) to examine how cultural and religious values shape care practices for older people; (2) to analyse how these values are translated into spatial adaptations and housing modifications; and (3) to identify gaps between informal care practices and formal housing policy and architectural frameworks. Drawing on 86 academic, policy, and grey-literature sources, the review demonstrates that older people’s care in Indonesia is deeply embedded in familial responsibility, neighbourhood solidarity, and Islamic teachings on filial piety. These values materialise in housing adaptations such as accessible prayer spaces, intergenerational layouts, and incremental modifications guided by local norms rather than professional standards. The review further identifies a lack of conceptual integration between cultural care practices and architectural design guidance. The paper therefore proposes a culturally and religiously responsive architectural framework to inform future empirical research and design practice.
