Abstract
Heat pumps, recognised as an essential solution due to their high energy efficiency and low-carbon features, have been promoted for wider deployment along with the upgrade and expansion of district heating networks. However, due to the limited capacity of the current power grids, the increased electricity demand due to large roll-out of heat pumps will substantially stress the distribution networks. This requires costly network reinforcement particularly in areas with high population density. As the integration of heat pumps could be in different forms, such as directly installed for individual households or buildings, or integrated in district heating networks, the deployment schemes will impact overall heating efficiency and electricity demand for heating. Therefore, it is important to investigate how heat pumps operate under different deployment plans and how they would affect the electricity load profiles in local energy networks. To address this question, this article proposes an energy flow calculation framework to evaluate how the deployment of heat pumps in different schemes would impact the local energy network efficiency and peak demand. Case studies are conducted on a local energy system with different deployment schemes. Results show that when delivering the same heating load, heat pumps integrated into a low-temperature district heating network can achieve both the highest heating efficiency and the lowest electricity demand increase.
