Abstract

COVID-19 led to major environmental changes for new graduates within the healthcare sector, resulting from university and workplace closures and/or restrictions, new rules and guidelines, and unprecedented fatalities impacting their transitions from university to workplace. The aim of this study was to explore the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the multiple and multi-dimensional transitions experiences of Year 2020 medical, nursing and dental graduates into clinical practice, and how their experiences impacted significant others. A purposive sample of 22 healthcare graduates was interviewed, over three time points, two to four months apart. The study was approved by University of Dundee Research Ethics Committee. Using Multiple and Multi-dimensional Transitions (MMT) Theory as a framework, data were analysed longitudinally and cross-sectionally. Contextual differences were noted between different professions’ transitions. Participants’ conceptualisations of transitions became more nuanced over time. They reported concurrent multiple transitions, including home–family transitions, work–life transitions, financial transitions, and social and relationship transitions in multiple contexts which also triggered significant others’ transitions and vice versa. They highlighted their experience of formal and informal support. MMT Theory was useful in unpacking healthcare graduates’ complex, multiple and multi-dimensional transitions, and the impact of the dynamic environment.
