Abstract

In this paper, we explore collage-making as a vehicle for discussing young adolescent girls’ experience of their built environments. We draw upon our AHRC-funded Being Human Festival 2024 workshop, My City, My Body, My Selfie, during which we invited teens who identify as female to create self-portraits and overwrite urban spaces of their choice while using analogue collage techniques. In our research, collage-making with selfie and urban photography is adopted as a queering method, facilitating non-discursive forms of dialogue with younger audiences on their gendered experience of their built environment.
