Abstract
The development of wide- field-of-view (FoV) medium-resolution (medium-R) mapping spectrometers has been identified as a priority in millimetre/sub-millimeter astronomy for future and existing facilities. Spectrometer architectures that have been historically used for this purpose have significant technical hurdles that limit their performance. To combat the inherent noise in Fourier Transform Spectrometers (FTSs) and achieve an effective R~2000 mapping spectrometer in the near term, we propose combining a medium-R FTS with a low-resolution on-chip Filterbank Spectrometer (FBS) focal plane as a post-dispersion mechanism. In this arrangement, an FBS with only a modest resolution is sufficient to dramatically improve sensitivity without compromising the fundamental imaging advantages of the FTS. We present our progress in the laboratory validation of this design and discuss performance forecasts from 10--15-m class telescopes as example platforms.
