Abstract
The world is facing the global warming issue and the impacts due to climate change. More and more countries world-wide have declared climate emergency. Heat waves, unprecedent typhoons, severe flooding and bushfires have happened much more often in recent years than at any time in the history. Carbon emission from buildings contributes more than 40% of the total global carbon emissions annually. In addition, the energy consumption of the large-scale shopping mall is the highest among different building types. China, being the world’s second largest economy by nominal GDP, is forecasting a continuous growth in the building construction market. Therefore, improvement in the energy consumption in the large-scale shopping mall is necessary. The aim of this research is to investigate the energy performance in order to provide guidelines on how to reduce energy consumption in large scale shopping mall in hot summer warm winter climate zone in China. The research was supported by comprehensive literature research, which helped to understand the knowledge gap in this field. Hypothesis modelling is the key section as it established basic understanding of how a large-scale shopping mall would perform in terms of energy in the hot-summer-warm-winter climate zone. It set a foundation for the whole research. The hypothetical model that was validated against literatures provided a platform to evaluate the impacts of different parameters on the ultimate building energy performance. The validated hypothetical model tests the sensitivity of each parameter related to building energy consumption. This helps identify potential energy-saving areas and provides guidelines for reducing energy use in large-scale shopping malls located in hot summer, warm winter climate zones. The large-scale shopping mall in the hot summer warm winter climate zone has the highest energy consumption. From the literature review, it found that it is rarely designed to be green and lack of academic studies and guidelines for designing an energy efficient shopping mall. Therefore, this thesis “Investigation of Improvement Strategies on Large-scale Shopping Mall in Hot Summer Warm Winter” is established to investigate its energy performance in order to find out potential energy saving measures and to provide guidelines on designing an energy efficient large-scale shopping mall.
