Abstract
In this chapter, I offer a consideration of the nature and quality of education research, the field within which all the foregoing contributions may be located. I then look across and between the chapters, taking them as collective inspiration for an exploration of three important matters that resonate with my own experience. First, I consider the sense in which doctoral study is a form of apprenticeship, and the implications this has for assessment and learning activity. Second, I look at the meanings of ‘original contribution to knowledge’ and the role of creative struggle. Third, I muse upon the significant transition that is perhaps ‘hidden in plain sight’ in the phrase ‘Professional Doctorate’, arguing that this challenge should not be underestimated. Finally, the chapter notes a sense in which Doctor of Education (EdD) programmes may be key in proposed improvements to the wider education research ecosystem.
