Abstract

Recently, to catch up with the vast and rapid urban neoliberal developments that became widespread across the Middle East, Amman’s authorities and developers initiated one of the most ambitious urban restructuring and spatial transformations of the city’s image and urban topography. The Al-Abdali regeneration project, also known as the New Downtown Business District, is an integral aspect of this initiative. It is conceived as an avant-garde high-end project that would reorient Amman’s socioeconomic compass and redirect its environmental spatial coordinates. In their effort to achieve and restore the lost livability of the area and to maximize its multifaceted purposes, the project designers focused on the complementarity, integration, compatibility, and vitality between the Abdali project and its direct surroundings and the old downtown. To assess if these goals have been attained in practice, a questionnaire survey and a comparative analysis were conducted as part of the present study. The aim was to clarify the role of visual attributes in transforming the city’s identity and imageability. In this context, a distinction is made between the self or inner identity and the projected identity, allowing users’ perceptions of Amman’s old and new downtowns to be evaluated.
