Abstract

Purpose: Early, effective rehabilitation has been shown to prevent complications and achieve better recovery outcomes for people with complex fractures following traumatic injury. Evidence from the healthcare literature suggests that people should be actively involved and engaged in their rehabilitation to maximise the benefits. However, engagement is a difficult behaviour for people with complex fractures to sustain because of the long and painful recovery process. The aim of this study was to explore the barriers and facilitators to engagement in rehabilitation after complex fractures and identify potential solutions that could be used to inform development of a rehabilitation intervention for this population.
