Abstract

Multilingual education in post-colonial societies challenges the traditional labelling of languages (e.g., L1, L2) in classroom contexts. For learners with complex linguistic repertoires, what might conventionally be called a ‘second language (L2)’ is often less a chronological L2 than an additional language (LX) that is organically integrated into the learner's repertoire and serves as a medium of learning. This recognition prompts a shift of focus from the target language promoted by the teacher to the complex processes experienced/engaged by the learner. In other words, L2 medium-of-instruction becomes LX medium-of-learning. This special issue seeks to break new paths by exploring the possibilities of this conceptual move in relation to language learning motivation (LLM). Research shows that L2 students without prior experience in L2 medium-of-instruction struggle with comprehension, participation and LLM, especially with demanding content. Translanguaging pedagogies support content and language learning, but their potentialities in LLM have not been explored fully. The special issue advocates centring students’ learning processes to address motivational challenges in LX-medium-of-instruction. This special issue provides data-driven insights into translanguaging as a mediator for LX motivational development. Collectively, the studies argue that translanguaging as a dynamic and inclusive pedagogical approach can motivate students' learning of LX and content knowledge and enhance their engagement in learning.
