Abstract

Medieval readers of bestiaries were accustomed to seeing lions depicted on the surface of parchment pages. Drawing on pioneering studies by medievalists on materiality, this article sheds light on how parchment texts invite the reader to strip away layers of visual and textual interpretation to reflect on their affinity with sovereign creatures living within their skin—a process prompted by the writing medium itself.
