Abstract
This commentary takes up Moats and colleagues’ powerful and urgent account of the dark side of public values in algorithmic systems by pressing on two areas of their framework: whether feedback can remain meaningful when its channels are manipulated, and whether values can redirect technological development once its infrastructural trajectory has been settled. I describe as temporal foreclosure the way urgency compresses deliberation and postpones scrutiny until systems have become entrenched. Temporal foreclosure, I argue, helps produce “infrastructure inevitability”, the assumption that continued computational expansion lies beyond political contestation. Reclaiming public values therefore requires not only better implementation but institutional time for refusal, revision and repair, alongside the democratic capacity to build less, slow down or decide against particular forms of computation.
