Abstract
Screen tourism has become a well-established area of research given the role that films and television shows play in driving visitors to specific locations. As the film and television industry grows, however, so does the increasingly urgent question of its environmental impact. And while there are steps being taken to address what production companies can do to reduce waste or how tourism organisations can minimise their carbon footprint, the environmental impacts of screen tourism are underexamined. Focusing on two famous screen tourism locations – Freshwater West in Pembrokeshire, well-known to Harry Potter fans, and The Dark Hedges in County Antrim, used in Game of Thrones – this chapter examines the different approaches taken to mitigating the environmental impacts of screen tourism and proposes a framework for building sustainable screen tourism into the production process while acknowledging the benefits it brings to the area and the importance of the location to fans. Drawing on participant observation and interviews, the author suggests that adopting a co-design approach where fans are involved in a more participatory way throughout the production process would be particularly relevant for properties where the values of the fandom explicitly align with a sustainability ethos.
