Abstract
This brief study examines non-standard exchanges of knowledge in selected narratives from the Upaniṣads. It argues that these episodes reveal a flexible dynamic of knowledge transfer in early Sanskrit literature, characterised by interactions between unconventional gurus and atypical disciples. By highlighting such narrative inversions of expected pedagogical roles, the study suggests a system in which established patterns could be set aside in certain cases, allowing knowledge to circulate beyond expected social and institutional boundaries.
