Abstract

This chapter explores the response of river systems to local and regional uplift caused by individual earthquakes at short time scales, and across multiple seismic cycles at long time scales. The impact on rivers because of pulses of sediment delivered to channels during and after earthquakes is also considered to illustrate the wider geomorphic impact of seismicity on river channels. By summarising the current understanding of the linkages between rivers and hillslopes, and by describing documented geomorphic responses to coseismic forcing across different time scales and fluvial systems, we highlight areas of recent advancement, knowledge gaps and key research questions.
