Abstract

This chapter examines colour, form and materiality in the architecture of Venice through the ideas of the art-writer Adrian Stokes (1902–1972), beginning with John Ruskin (1819–1900), as the inspiration for many later critiques of the city – with his notions of the ‘wall-veil’ and ‘incrustation’. It interprets Stokes's vision of Venice as a city of blackness and whiteness – of white stone and interior darkness; his application of his key aesthetic dyad of ‘carving and modelling’ to the carving of colour in Venice; and his stress on the values of surface colour, embodied in the materiality and craft that Ruskin also extolled
