Abstract
Adaptive and flexible manufacturing is becoming a key requirement for next‑generation manufacturing systems in healthcare, where responsiveness, precision, and safety are paramount. Work will be presented on how adaptive manufacturing strategies can support the design and production of 4D health technology, using robotic manufacturing. Once key issue is that traditional robotic systems have joints which suffer from tribological effects, such as friction, wear and backlash. This can be eliminated by incorporating flexure‑based complaint mechanisms as pseudo joints which offer intrinsic compliance, reduced wear, and improved sterility, making them particularly attractive for medical and assistive robotic applications. Preliminary results highlight how components can be manufactured at scale while maintaining tight tolerances and repeatability. Flexible manufacturing approaches enable rapid iteration and customisation of health technology, allowing systems to evolve over time in response to clinical, ergonomic, and regulatory requirements. Adaptive manufacturing also supports resilient supply chains and personalised healthcare technologies accelerating innovation at the intersection of engineering, robotics, and healthcare delivery.
