Abstract

This chapter examines some of the many guises in which the Picturesque has been revived in the surface patterns, forms, and materiality of British architecture in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Here, the focus shall be on just four aspects of these Picturesque revivals: John Ruskin’s ‘wall-veil’, and the links to William Morris and the surfaces of Romance in the Arts and Crafts. The revival of the Picturesque in the 1940s, as identified by the leading British journal The Architectural Review , with the notion of ‘Sharawaggi’. And, in conclusion, what the critic Reyner Banham has called ‘The Revenge of the Picturesque’ in the post-World War II era is evident in the work of even the most avowedly avant-garde architects such as James Stirling.
