Abstract

In this talk and discussion, we will aim to shift our awareness beyond the pragmatic use of tools such as occupational health referrals to considering the type of work environment that might allow people with lived experience of cancer to flourish, including in precarious employment. In order to do so, Marion will cast a particular spotlight on the experience after or between active periods of treatment, which may be a lesser explored area. Drawing on personal and anecdotal experience, she will touch on: Living and working with the risk and fear of recurrence, including the mind-body and psycho-social (or biopsychosocial) impact of negative workplace experiences. Living with prognostic uncertainty and its potential impact on future projection and aspirations. Raising awareness of the misuse of the parity principle where this erases visibility and contributions, hampering a path towards future projections that may already be fragile. We will leave room for discussion, during which participants are encouraged to share experiences, insights, and possibilities for better work-places and practices.
