Abstract

The Tree of Life (ToL) is a strengths-based, narrative intervention increasingly used with sanctuary-seekers including survivors of torture and political violence. This systematic review synthesised qualitative evidence on the acceptability of ToL in these populations. Nine studies were identified and thematically synthesised. Findings were discussed in relation to the Theoretical Framework of Acceptability (TFA) and generated four analytical themes: (1) ToL as a safe container for trauma processing; (2) Relational Empowerment and Sustained Belonging; (3) Psychological Gains; (4) Structural Barriers and Constraints. Participants described ToL as acceptable and fostered safety, connection, agency, identity reconstruction, hope and resilience through trauma-informed and culturally adaptable practices. However, benefits were sometimes constrained by ongoing structural challenges including poverty, gendered restrictions and immigration uncertainty. Future research should develop outcome measures that capture domains valued by participants including safety, belonging, identity reconstruction and post-traumatic growth.
