Abstract

Background: The perinatal period is a critical time for the development of parent-infant relationships with significant implications for both parent and child wellbeing. Video Interaction Guidance (VIG) is a strengths-based video-feedback intervention that aims to enhance parental sensitivity through guided reflection on attuned interaction. VIG’s effectiveness as an independent intervention during the perinatal period has not been previously explored. Aims: To explore the impact of VIG in the perinatal period on the parent-infant relationship, parental emotional wellbeing and infant socio-emotional outcomes. Methods: A systematic search identified nine eligible studies across 317 parent-infant dyads. Narrative synthesis was employed in accordance with PRISMA and SWiM (Campbell et al., 2020) guidelines. Results: Improvements in the parent-infant relationship through increased maternal sensitivity was the most consistently reported outcome, while findings for parental mental health and infant outcomes were mixed and inconclusive. Conclusions: While VIG shows promise in improving parental sensitivity in the perinatal period, the literature remains in its infancy and further high quality trials are needed.
